About Jack

Jack, a 5-year-old purebred Golden, was originally owned by the grandfather in the family, but he passed away. Care of the grandmother and the dog fell to the granddaughter, and she just could not manage both, so she surrendered the dog to us. Jack was quite overweight having had a diet of canned dog food with people bread spread with peanut butter, as well as additions of chicken and cheese. An adoptive couple excitedly agreed to be Jack’s new family. However, they had to go out of town and could not accept him right away, so one of our members graciously fostered him for the week they were gone.

Jack was initially transported to one of our veterinary partners where he weighed in a 106 pounds – should be about 75! – and had all his initial tests done. His coat was such a mess with mats everywhere he had to be shaved, but the fur will grow back by wintertime. When introduced to the foster's daughter’s two dogs, Jack basically ignored them. He is a very happy, chill kind of dog who just wants to play ball all day. The foster really liked him, but he is a little bigger and younger than she really wants. While he was there, she adopted a Bichon mix and they got along great.

Jack rode well to his adopters. He met resident dog, Rookie, very well. They did not interact much but both were fine. Rookie was happy to get new toys (Jack’s) that he could destroy. Our transporter suggested to the adopter that she should get some Kong toys and Chuck-it balls so that Jack would have some toys. They had tennis balls and he was happy about that, but Rookie strips the cloth off. The adopters just love Jack and commented that he is really great. The teenaged daughter seemed shy around him and needed to wait her turn since her parents seemed so happy with him. Last night and again this morning, the adopter reported that everything is just wonderful. Our transporter commented: I can’t wait to see him with some weight off and his shaved coat grown back in! Fortunately, Jack did not need much more in the way of vet care, just a check on his blood work and urine and a dental. Nice!
